Mistrunner’s Spice Bread

Open mouth, insert noms!
(Based on Mulgore Spice Bread – World of Warcraft)

Ingredients:
- 1 cup dark corn syrup
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed (use the heel of your hand to press the sugar into the cup – add sugar until full)
- 1 egg
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 325°F
- Combine corn syrup, brown sugar, and egg; mix well (if you have a mixer, use it on a very low setting)
- Combine dry ingredients in another bowl; use a mixing spoon or spatula to mix the dry ingredients together – just be gentle! (Optional – add 1 1/2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice for more spice!)
- Add dry ingredients to egg mixture and alternate with milk (just add a little at a time to properly blend it all together); mix well.
- Pour into a greased, wax paper-lined 9×5 loaf pan
- Bake for 80-90 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean (the toothpick test)
- Allow loaf to cool for 10 minutes in the pan before removing it; place on wire rack to allow loaf to cool completely (alternatively, if you don’t have a wire rack, a bacon rack or other item that allows air to circulate under the loaf will work as well).
- Wrap and let stand for 24 hours before slicing.

~ I just have a couple questions.
1 – Does this taste anything like spice cake? I love spice cake, and to have it as a bread will be just heaven.
2 – What type of flour are you using? All Purpose, or Self-Rising? (With the salt and everything, I’m thinking AP but I just want to be sure.)

Can molasses substitute for the dark corn syrup? I’ll be honest, I never knew dark corn syrup existed, and judging from the high similarity this recipe bears towards gingerbread, I can only assume it would be suitable. Of course, correct me if I’m wrong.
I’d love to see recipes for Delicious chocolate cake and Murloc fin stew ;D
Sounds delicious, but are you sure about using wax paper in the pan? Wax paper melts/burns, so I don’t think you should bake it! Perhaps you meant to write Parchment Paper instead? Parchment doesn’t melt or burn and is intended for using as a pan liner in baking.

Hello! Glad you like the recipe! As for your questions:
1 – I’ve…never actually had spice cake, but I would assume they taste about the same. XD
2 – Making this, I used All-Purpose white flour, unsifted.
3 – Teresa is right – parchment paper is the way to go, but I actually used wax paper for this, and it worked fine. I made sure to grease the pan, and there were no problems. I wonder if because it bakes at a relitively low temperature, the paper doesn’t burn? =/
4 – You should, yes. It should be in the spice/flour/cooking supplies isle of your local supermarket. The one I used came in a little tin. I like my stuff savory spicy, so I added some extra. XD

Hmmm…I…would say yes, perhaps, but wouldn’t that much molassas be hard to work with? I don’t know how drastic the difference is, but I would recommend trying the corn syrup. But hey, if you can get it to work with molassas, let us know!
Honestly, I had never heard of dark corn syrup before this, but lo and behold, it was in my local grocery store. Go fig.
I love trying new things, that aren’t super hard, so this was right up my alley.
1 – Oh! You should definitely try it if you get a chance. Especially with a whipped cream-cheese frosting. Very mild flavor, that isn’t very sweet.
2 – All-Purpose white flour, unsifted – check.
3 – Cool.
It’s just I’m not fond of the flavor wax paper can add to food if you’re not careful, so I only have parchment paper on hand.
4 – That sounds just perfect, I love multi-depth flavor, so I’ll keep an eye out the next time I go shopping.
And re:molasses – It’s actually not that hard to work with.
I made some gingerbread cookies from scratch last winter using it, and while a little sticky, it wasn’t horrible. No worse that corn syrup imo.

Is pumpkin pie spice basically more of the spices already included in the recipe? I ask because I’m in Australia, and pumpkin pie spice is not readily available outside North America. Same goes for corn syrup.

To make pumpkin pie spice, mix allspice, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg – all powdered, of course – in roughly equal amounts. (I typically include more cinnamon and nutmeg, but you can vary by preference.) You can replace the corn syrup with molasses.

You can find pumpkin spice with any of the other spices in the grocery store. My store carries all the spices in the same aisle as the baking ingredients. Pumpkin spice is usually in a short spice jar.

I can’t address #1, because I haven’t tasted it yet, but I imagine it would.
2 – All-purpose flour, yes. You’re right to think that SR flour wouldn’t work with the salt.
3 – You can use parchment paper pretty much anywhere wax paper is called for in baking, so yes.

Yes, you can substitute molasses for the dark corn syrup. The bread will just taste a little sweeter.

You can use wax paper as long as it’s not directly exposed to the heat (i.e., as long as it has batter or cooking surface against it at all points). In this case, though, you can certainly substitute parchment paper if you’re worried about the wax melting or burning.
